The Sarasota County Planning and Development Services Department offers a variety of services to Sarasota, from community engagement through the development review process. The Department is made up of five divisions: Building, Code Enforcement, Environmental Protection, Planning and Zoning, and Property Management. The Chief Building Official is part of the Building Division, which is designed to help Sarasota County property owners, building contractors, and permit agents with the permitting process. Sarasota County seeks an experienced, problem-solving professional to serve as the Chief Building Official. This is an advanced leadership and management role, which serves as the designated Sarasota County Building Official, the Sarasota County Flood Plain Administrator, and oversees the Planning and Development Services Building Division and associated personnel.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, building construction, public administration, or a related field; and six years of combined experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered or certified contractor, or construction superintendent, and five years of supervisory experience. Candidates with a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, building construction, public administration, or related field may substitute for one year of experience. At least 10 years of combined experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered or certified contractor, or construction superintendent may substitute for the degree.
Candidates must possess a State of Florida license as a Building Code Administrator (Building Official) and a Florida Driver’s License. Supervisory experience in a building department for local government is preferred, and additional professional certification is highly desirable.
The salary for this position ranges from $111,000-$118,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
